STEELERS WEEK 10: HAS FATHER TIME FINALLY SACKED RODGERS?
- Tyler Yasembousky, Contributor
Well… that was certainly an embarrassing performance from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Even worse, it fell squarely on Aaron Rodgers — the supposed savior of this team. Up to this point, Rodgers had been having a solid season: 17 touchdowns (now 18) and, more importantly, he hadn’t been costing his team games. When the defense showed up, Aaron made sure to do his part to keep the offense moving and pull out several of their five wins.
They even just beat a Colts team featuring an MVP candidate and the best record in the league.
So why did it look like Father Time suddenly came sprinting for Aaron Rodgers on Sunday night?
This marks the Steelers’ third prime-time loss in four games, and easily the most pathetic one yet.
The defense actually did its job in the first half — holding the Chargers to just 12 points (two of which came from a safety). Realistically, keeping that offense to 10 points of defensive scoring should’ve been enough for Pittsburgh to stay in it.
But the offense couldn’t hold up its end of the bargain.
They put up only three points by halftime, while Rodgers turned the ball over and missed multiple wide-open throws — sailing passes over his receivers’ heads more than once. His QBR at halftime was the lowest of his career, and he looked completely out of rhythm.
For the first time this season, Rodgers wasn’t just struggling — he was the reason the team was losing.
Now, I’m not ready to hit panic mode or write Rodgers off for the rest of the season. But this coming Sunday is huge. He has to have a bounce-back game, especially with the Steelers facing the Cincinnati Bengals — statistically the worst defense in the league. It’s also the same Bengals team that embarrassed Pittsburgh on Thursday Night Football just two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens have won four straight and are starting to catch fire. That makes this matchup borderline a must-win for the Steelers… and an absolute must-play-well for Aaron Rodgers.
Mike Tomlin is just four wins away from securing his 20th straight winning season — an incredible feat — but the road ahead is brutal. Every win matters from this point on.
The Steelers hold only a one-game lead in the AFC North, and they still have to face the Ravens twice — including in the final week of the season, which could very well decide the division.
