A ROUGH WEEK FOR THE NEW YORK GIANTS
- Rob Crowther, Editor In Chief
In the span of just over one week, the Giants have gone through the proverbial gamut of lows one team can experience in the NFL. After an abysmal defensive performance by the G-men last week against the 49ers it was starting to feel like the ineffective Giants teams of old. Fast forward one week and the Giants fall to the Bears, Jaxson Dart is out with a concussion, Head Coach Brian Daboll has been released from the team, and it was announced that backup Jameis Winston will be starting for the team this Sunday against the Packers.
As I’ve said many times throughout the season, there will be growing pains. Dart, who has really inspired the team, and has been playing ahead of his years, has unfortunately taken a beating on the field. Statistically however, Dart is the first quarterback in NFL HISTORY to score a rushing touchdown in five straight games. There’s no denying this kid’s talent and importance to the team, but we need to be patient, and keep him healthy.
When it comes to the release of Daboll, and I hate to see anyone get “future endeavored”, but it may have been a necessary move. The Giants have lost significant leads in the fourth quarter over the past few games, and the clock management has been an issue. I give Daboll credit for all of his hard work, making the call to start Jaxson Dart, and really endearing himself to these young players. The question now remains who is the next head coach of the New York Football Giants, as many are pointing to former Green Bay and Dallas Coach Mike McCarthy.
In these difficult situations we look for silver linings. I’m interested to see what Winston can bring to the team as the starting quarterback against the Packers. He’s been a team player and mentor from the sidelines throughout the season.
Again, patience is key. Let’s use the second half of this season to get healthy, re-evaluate this team as a whole, and get ready to build a team around guys like Dart, Skattebo, Nabers, and Burns. Despite the recent struggles, one thing Giants fans still have is hope for the future.
