5 TAKEAWAYS FROM WWE THIS WEEK

- Rob Crowther, Editor In Chief

Things are not only heating up outside, but also within the universe that is the WWE. With a star-studded Night of Champions PLE around the corner, here are 5 Takeaways from this past week in WWE.

1. John Cena’s Pipe Bomb Promo

Almost exactly 14 years after CM Punk’s infamous “Pipe bomb” promo, Cena retaliated with a near perfect promo chock full of nuance, sarcasm, and shock value. Cena recited a few famous Punk lines such as, “I actually like you…” and “I’m breaking the fourth wall…” , while putting his own spin on things. Cena went as far as to mention the names of former WWE Superstars, Claudio Castignioli, Matt Cardona, and Nic Nemeth. The “Never Seen Seventeen”, also subtly called CM Punk a hypocrite without hitting us over the head with it. There’s been a lowkey, under-appreciated brilliance to everything Cena has been doing with this heel turn, and I’m here for it.

2. Jey Uso VS. Cody Rhodes

Simply put, this was a great match. No funny business, no tricky finish. Just pure babyface vs. babyface wrestling. Handshakes, ovations, and a post-match show of respect by BOTH competitors. Cody proved to be the better man, but Jey continues to show why he is also a TOP singles star. I could go on and on, but make the time to go and WATCH THIS MATCH.

3. Gunther VS. Goldberg

The Goldberg end of things have been pretty straight-forward and pro wrestling 101. Nothing really grabs me here, other than the fact that I believe that this is one of Gunther’s dream matches. And for that reason, I’m glad he can finally have this match.  That being said this one is as straight forward promo-wise and storyline as it gets. Fortunately, I think this works very well for a guy like Gunther who continues to impress by being unapologetically old school. Expect a post-match show of respect after this bout.

4. Is it finally Jade Cargill’s Time?

Cargill has impressed since her WrestleMania 41 bout with Naomi. She continues to improve week by week. For years now, we’ve been expecting Jade to have that proverbial jetpack to the top, but it has yet to happen. A match with Asuka at Night of Champions should certainly test her and for that reason, I think it is finally Jade’s time. Give me Cargill to win at Night of Champions to take on Tiffy at SummerSlam. And don’t forget…Naomi still holds that Money In the Bank briefcase.

5. Sami vs Karrios Kross

Sami Zayn is a future World Heavyweight Champion. It’s just a matter of WHEN. For a while now, Kross has been the proverbial devil on the shoulder, testing Zayn and this has finally come to blows. Not only is this a great character arc for Sami, (please don’t turn him heel) but it’s great to finally see Kross in the ring on a PLE. Give me Sami to win this match at Night of Champions, but have Kross act like this is all part of some longtime plan.
