STEELERS WEEK 8: PITTSURGH WE HAVE A PROBLEM

- Tyler Yasembousky, Contributor

Sunday Night Football — the biggest stage in the NFL, the most-watched game of the week.

Aaron Rodgers facing his former team, the Green Bay Packers. The storylines wrote themselves. The hype was sky-high. Two proud franchises. Two rabid fan bases. The lights couldn’t have been brighter.

And under those lights, Pittsburgh’s biggest flaws were exposed for the world to see.

Another prime-time game, another embarrassment for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Aaron Rodgers was supposed to be the difference — the steadying hand, the veteran presence to elevate this team past its bad habits. Instead, Sunday night against his old team, it was the same old story: a defense that couldn’t stop a nosebleed, an offense that vanished in key moments, and a team that completely melted when the lights were brightest.

At 4-3, the record doesn’t look awful on paper. But anyone actually watching knows better.

This isn’t a contender — it’s a talented team stuck in neutral, hoping Rodgers can keep patching up leaks that never stop springing.

Steelers fans deserve better. And if this keeps up, the noise around this team won’t just be frustration — it’ll be full-blown outrage.

A Defense in Name Only....

Defense used to be the DNA of this franchise.

The offense has been inconsistent since the days of the “Killer B’s” — Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, and Le’Veon Bell (2014–2017).

But the defense always held things together. Always.

Those days are long gone.

This pass defense is pathetic. There’s no pressure, no intimidation, no bite.

I was one of the loudest voices saying T.J. Watt deserved his contract extension — and I still stand by it. But one man can’t carry eleven.

And let’s be real: no team in the NFL has spent more money on its defense than Pittsburgh.

What’s that investment gotten them? Nothing close to elite results.

This was supposed to be a shutdown unit — the kind of defense that, paired with a competent offense, could make a Super Bowl run. Instead, it’s one of the league’s biggest disappointments.

Rodgers and the offense haven’t been perfect, but more often than not, they’ve done enough to win.

The defense? Not even close.

Two Fatal Flaws

Right now, two things are absolutely killing this team:

1. They can’t stop anyone on third down.

2. They can’t make a big play when it matters most.

That’s the difference between winning and losing — and right now, Pittsburgh is losing the moments that define seasons.

The Steelers desperately need another elite wide receiver, and they need to fix this defense yesterday.

Because take one look at the remaining schedule — it’s a gauntlet:

the Colts (the best team in football right now), the Chargers, the Ravens twice, the Lions, and more.

If something doesn’t change, this is quickly turning into a 7- or 8-loss team right before our eyes.

The Same Old Story

It’s becoming the never-ending Steelers script: finish 10-7 or 9-8, limp into the playoffs, and bow out in the first round.

That might be acceptable for some franchises — but not in Pittsburgh.

Historically, this team never makes big moves at the trade deadline.

This year, that has to change.

The Pickens trade — which I hated the second it happened — looks even worse now. He’s lighting it up in Dallas while this offense searches for someone to step up.

It’s time for Pittsburgh to face reality: this team has a real problem.

If the defense doesn’t wake up, they’ll be lucky to even stay in the AFC North race — a division that felt like theirs just three weeks ago.

⸻

Next up? A home game against the 7-1 Colts.

Yeah… that should go great.

I’ll see you back here next week — when we’re 4-4, and I’m furious about it.
