YANKEES DROP 2 GAMES TO METS IN SUBWAY SERIES
- April Claudio, Contributor
Well the Grimace magic continued on as the Mets won game one against the Yankees Tuesday night. Gerrit Cole had his second start of the season and it didn’t go that well. He pitched four innings and gave up 7 runs. David Peterson got the start for the Mets. He pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up 1 run and struck out 8. The Yankees scored most of their runs off the Mets bullpen. The Mets went up 1-0 in the first inning as Cole gave up a double, a single and walked 3. It could have been 2 runs but Pete Alonso was thrown out at home. Mark Vientos and Harrison Bader hit solo home runs in the second inning. Vientos hit another solo home run in the fourth inning and Brandon Nimmo hit a two run home run. Juan Soto hit a home run in the fifth inning making the score 1-6. The Mets added 3 more runs in the sixth inning off a fielding error, a double and a sacrifice fly. Aaron Judge had an RBI double in the seventh inning to add one more run for the Yankees. The Yankees rallied in the eighth inning as the Mets went through 3 relief pitchers. Austin Wells had an RBI single and with the bases loaded Aaron Judge hit a home run putting the Yankees down by 2 runs. But the Yankees couldn’t get anything going in the ninth inning so the final score was 7-9.
Well Mets fans will continue to believe in Grimace as the Mets beat the Yankees in game 2 Wednesday night.
Luis Gil took the mound against Sean Manaea after a rain delay. Gil has had a stellar pitching performance until his last two starts. He pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up 5 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks. Manaea pitched 5 innings and gave up 0 runs but walked 5. The Mets went up 3-0 in the third inning with an RBI single by J.D. Martinez and a 2 run home run by Francisco Alvarez. They scored 4 more runs in the fifth inning off a few doubles, a walk and a sacrifice fly. Aaron Judge put the Yankees on the board with a 2 run home run in the sixth inning, his 30th, but those were the only runs the Yankees scored. The Mets scored 5 more runs off the Yankees bullpen. Tyrone Taylor had a 3 run home run in the sixth inning, Harrison Bader had a solo home run in the seventh, and Mark Vientos had an RBI single in the eighth. The final score was 2-12. Mets won again. Juan Soto has had a lot of walks recently and added 2 more in this game.
The Mets are now at .500 and the struggling Yankees have lost 4 consecutive series. They move into a 4 game series against the last place Blue Jays on Thursday. Here’s hoping they can bounce back.
