YANKEES SWEEP TIGERS

- April Claudio, Contributor

After dropping three out of four to The Baltimore Orioles, The New York Yankees regrouped and regained momentum during their series against The Detroit Tigers. Here's our game by game recap of the stellar series.

Game 1: The Yankees win 2-1 with a walk off single by Anthony Rizzo. The Yankees were scoreless until the 9th inning. Aaron Judge scored on a double by Giancarlo Stanton. Taylor Trammell came in as a pinch runner for Stanton who scored on Rizzo’s single. Reese Olson got the loss and Dennis Santana got the win despite a strong outing by Marcus Stroman who got the start.

Game 2: Clarke Schmidt pitched against Casey Mize. Neither had a terrific game. Both only pitched about five innings. Mize gave up 5 runs, which included a 3 run home run by Anthony Rizzo and Schmidt gave up 3 runs, one of which was a solo home run in the first inning by leadoff hitter Riley Greene. The Yankees won the second game of the series, 5-3. Clay Holmes picked up his 11th save.

Aaron Judge, who has been struggling at the plate this season, was 2-4 with 2 runs and a RBI before being ejected in the 7th inning by the home plate umpire. Judge was about to walk to first and realized the umpire called the pitch strike 3 and had a few words to say as he walked back to the dugout. This is the first time Judge has been ejected from a game in his career.

Game 3: Yankees won 5-3 in a game shortened to 8 innings due to a rain delay of almost an hour. Nestor Cortes pitched against Tarik Skubal. Skubal pitched 6 innings and Cortes pitched 6.1 innings and both only gave up two runs each. Aaron Judge had a solo home run in his first at bat. Ian Hamilton took over for Cortes in the 7th inning when Cortes gave up two hits. Unfortunately Hamilton gave up two hits and a walk which drove in the two batters. Victor Gonzalez came in to close out the inning and the game was tied 2-2.  Shelby Miller took over for Skubal and struggled giving up a hit and two walks to load the bases. Andrew Chafin replaced him on the mound and gave up a double to Juan Soto which cleared the bases, putting the Yankees ahead 5-2. Gonzalez got the win and Miller got the loss. Dennis Santana pitched the 8th inning and recorded the save.

The Yankees get a day off tomorrow after playing 17 straight games and then face off against the Astros. They now have a record of 23-13.
