LIONS DEFEAT THE FALCONS

-Frank Leon, Contributor

The Detroit Lions moved to 2-1 after a defensive domination over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The Falcons came into the game with rookie sensation Bijan Robinson leading the way for their offensive gameplan and were hoping to continue their success on the ground against the Lions.

The Lions defense held them to 44 rushing yards on 20 attempts and completely shut down Bijan. Along with domination on the rushing side of things, the Lions also sacked Desmond Ridder 7 times including 2 from Aidan Hutchinson, his first two of the season. The Lions defense had only gotten one sack going into the game so this was a welcomed sight. DC Aaron Glenn changed up the defense from a zone scheme to a man blitz scheme for this game after the concerns of pressure going into this week. The star of the week on this side was absolutely rookie Brian Branch as he continues to put his name in the defensive rookie of the year race.

On the offensive side of things, the Lions weren't as good as usual. They were down starting LT Taylor Decker still but also two other spots on the offensive line were using backups and one of them went down with an injury during the game. Rookie RT Colby Sorsdal was in the game the majority of the game and definitely looked like a rookie. The Lions were still only sacked once and put up 358 total yards of offense. St Brown led the way with another 9 catch 100 yards game that can always be counted on from him and rookie Sam Laporta continued showing his ability with 8 catches for 84 yards and a TD. Rookie Jahmyr Gibbs led the way with 80 yards on the ground and Jared Goff ran one in himself.

The Lions will be on short rest as they play their second Thursday night game of the season against the hated Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. The Packers will look for revenge after last season's finale ended with the Lions ending their playoff hopes. The Lions will look to continue their 3 game winning streak against the Packers and get some sacks on young Jordan Love.

Lions notes:

-Sam Laporta is now leading all NFL TE's in yardage after sunday's games. Rookie TEs usually do not do well. He's now had 5+catches in all 3 games to start his career, an NFL record. -Brian Branch now has 18 tackles, 3 for loss,3 pass deflections and a pick 6 in 3 games.

-Aidan Hutchinson was tied for first in the NFL with 13 QB pressures going into this week and had no sacks. He ended with 2 this week and one of them was a strip sack. He will continue getting to the QB, it's just finishing the sack that continues to trouble him with the lack of pressure coming from the other side of the line. The loss of James Houston will impact this but the Lions defensive line showed improvement this week on that front. 6 Lions recorded a sack.
