Jets win season finale 17-3, and send Bill Belichick packing?
-Tom Mele, Contributor
Foxboro MA: The Jets finally broke their 15-game losing streak vs New England by virtue of a 17-3 win at
snowy Foxboro on Sunday. The win ended the Jets most disappointing season in memory as they
finished the season at 7-10. It may have also ended HC Bill Belichick’s career with the New England
Patriots (4-13), as of this writing no word on whether owner Robert Kraft is moving on from the future
Hall of Fame coach.
Awesome Amy, who is a lifelong Jets fan since the 70’s wanted a recap of the Jets season. We will start with their defense. Gang Green has a nice blend of youngsters and veterans as the “D” was the mainstay for the 2023 season finishing third in the NFL in overall defense.
LB’s C.J Mosley (151 tackles) and Quincy Williams (134 tackles) were the leaders of the unit while DE’s
Jermaine Johnson (7.5 sacks) and Bryce Huff (10 sacks) led the pass rush which was sixth in the NFL with
48 sacks. DL Quinnen Williams and CB Sauce Gardner once again showed the league why they have
promising careers in the league as they both put together All-Pro seasons. The Defense was not the
problem in 2023.
Special Teams was not the problem as Punter Thomas Moorestead led the NFL in punts inside the 20- yard line with 36 and his 48.8 punt average overall was his best since the 2012 season when he averaged
50.1 with the Saints. K Greg Zuerlein was 35 of 38 on FG’s which placed him one behind NFL leader
Brandon Aubrey of Dallas. “Awesome Amy” was recently quoted as saying “Zuerlein is the MVP of the Jets and they need to do everything they can to retain him”. Rookie WR Xavier Gipson was steady on special teams highlighted by the season opening return in overtime in week one over the Bills.
RB Breece Hall is a star. No other way to say it. Coming one year after ACL surgery, Breece came back
far quicker than the coaching staff figured. Hall finished off the Patriots on Sunday with a 50-yard scoring run and a two-point conversion putting an exclamation on a season which saw the budding star run for 507 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns over the last three games. Hall overall had 994 rushing yards and five TDs as well as 76 receptions for 591 yards and four touchdowns. He played every game which limited the need for off season pickup RB Dalvin Cook who eventually was released before this game to join another team for the playoffs.
WR Garrett Wilson led the team with 95 catches and 1,042 yards and three TDs. Wilson was always
matched up against the opposing’s team’s top defensive back and next year with the emergence of a
solid #2 receiver those stats will increase.
Obviously, the season was all about QB Aaron Rodgers and we covered this to ad nauseum through the
year.
Gang Green will move into 2024 with the #10 pick in the draft and a healthy Aaron Rodgers. Once again
Head Coach Robert Saleh and his coaching staff will look to end the current longest playoff drought in
professional sports. The BCP+ Team will be here to cover off season changes, so stay tuned!!
