YANKEES TAKE 2 OF 3 FROM CUBS

Friday night Luis Gil returned from the injured list and had a stellar start. He pitched six innings, gave up 0 runs and 1 hit and struck out 7. Jordan Wicks pitched for the Cubs. He pitched 5 innings and gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks. The Yankees scored those 3 runs in the third inning. Aaron Judge had a RBI double and 2 more runs scored on a single by Austin Wells. Gil and the Yankees bullpen consisting of Jake Cousins, Tommy Kahnle and Luke Weaver, combined held the Cubs to 1 hit. The Yankees won 3-0. Gil earned his 13th win and Weaver earned his first save.
Saturday night saw the return of Clarke Schmidt from the injured list. He pitched 4 2/3 innings before Nestor Cortes took over. Both pitched very well. Schmidt gave up 4 hits, 0 runs and struck out 2. Cortes pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up 0 hits, 0 runs, walked 1 and struck out 3. Javier Assad pitched for the Cubs. He gave up 2 runs, only 1 earned, off 3 hits in 5 2/3 innings and struck out 5. Austin Wells had a RBI single in the first inning. In the sixth inning Aaron Judge walked, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a single, and Judge scored on a throwing error by the Cubs catcher. The Yankees won 2-0.
Sunday Gerrit Cole pitched against former Yankee Jameson Taillon. Cole pitched 6 innings, gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and struck out 7. But Taillon also pitched well, he gave up 1 run on 6 hits in six innings and struck out 6. Both bullpens also pitched well. Jake Cousins and Clay Holmes combined, pitched two no hit shut out innings. The Cubs bullpen pitched 3 shut out, no hit innings. The Cubs won this game 1-2. Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored the Yankees only run off a sacrifice fly by Anthony Volpe in the second inning. Isaac Paredes hit a 2 run single in the first inning for the Cubs.
Next the Yankees face the Kansas City Royals.
