YANKEES LOSE 2 TO CARDINALS

Friday, the Yankees hosted the St. Louis Cardinals in the Bronx. Marcus Stroman was on the mound against Erick Fedde. Stroman gave up 2 runs in 7 innings to earn his 10th win of the season. Leaving Clay Holmes to earn his 29th save. Fedde earned the loss despite having 8 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings; he gave up 4 runs in those innings. Giancarlo Stanton scored in the second inning off a sacrifice fly by Anthony Volpe. The Cardinals scored 2 runs in the third inning off a pair of singles to put them ahead but Juan Soto hit a RBI double and Austin Wells hit a 2 run home run putting the Yankees ahead by 2. Nolan Arenado hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to put the Cardinals down just one run but also in that inning Wells hit his second 2 run home run. The Yankees won with a final score of 6-3. This was Wells’ first career multi-home-run game.
Saturday night Will Warren got the start against Kyle Gibson. Warren’s starting career for the Yankees continued to not go well. He gave up 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings. Gibson gave up 1 run in 7 innings and struck out 6. The Yankees scored first with a RBI single by Anthony Volpe in the second inning but the Cardinals scored 4 runs in the third inning. Nolan Arenado hit a RBI single and Brendan Donovan hit a 3 run home run. Ivan Herrera hit a RBI double in the sixth inning and scored on a throwing error by Austin Wells. The Cardinals were now winning by 5. The Yankees attempted a comeback in the eighth inning scoring 4 runs. With the bases loaded Volpe hit a RBI single and Giancarlo Stanton, pinch hitting for Trent Grisham, hit a 2 RBI double. Luke Weaver closed out the game with 0 hits and Ryan Helsley closed out for the Cardinals with 1 hit. The Cardinals won this one, 6-5. Helsley earned his 42nd save and Warren is now 0-3. This was the first win for the Cardinals in the Bronx since the 1964 World Series. Warren has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre along with Ben Rice.
Sunday afternoon saw the return of Anthony Rizzo at first base. Nestor Cortes got the start against Miles Mikolas. Both struggled as it rained hard off and on. Mikolas gave up 5 runs, 3 were earned, in 4 innings. Cortes gave up 5 runs in 4 innings as well. The Cardinals scored first, a RBI single in the second inning but the Yankees answered with 2 runs as Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo home run and Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored on a throwing error by Mikolas after hitting a ground rule double. Masyn Winn hit a 2 run double and Luken Baker hit a 2 run home run in the fourth inning. Jordan Walker hit a 2 run home run in the fifth inning putting the Cardinals up 5 runs. The Yankees came alive in the bottom of the fifth, Anthony Rizzo hit a RBI double, Alex Verdugo hit a RBI single and Gleyber Torres hit a RBI single. The Yankees were now down only 2 runs. In the sixth inning. Anthony Volpe and Torres each had a RBI which tied the game. Unfortunately things went bad for the Yankees very quickly after that. The Cardinals scored 4 runs in the seventh inning off singles given up by Jake Cousins and Tommy Kahnle. Phil Brickford came in to close the inning and another run scored on a bunt and a throwing error. To add to that, Lars Nootbaar hit a 2 run home run off Ron Marinaccio in the ninth inning. The Cardinals won with a final score of 14-7. Cousins earned the loss and JoJo Romero earned the win. Jordan Walker became the third youngest Cardinal to get 5 hits in a single game.

The Yankees now lead the American League East by only half a game above the Orioles.
Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt are aiming to return to the Yankees next weekend against the Chicago Cubs. But first the Yankees begin a 3 game series Monday night against the Texas Rangers.
