Friday night was the start of the 3 game series of the Yankees vs the Giants. Aaron Judge, who was heavily sought after by the Giants in the off season, had a stellar night in his first appearance in San Francisco. Aaron Judge had 2 home runs in the game. The first was a 3 run home run in the third inning. The second was solo shot in the sixth inning. Marcus Stroman pitched against Jordan Hicks. Stroman pitched 7 1/3 innings and gave up 2 runs. Hicks pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up 4 runs. The Giants scored a run in the second inning after Stroman gave up a pair of singles. In the same inning Gleyber Torres hit a single and Anthony Rizzo hit a double. Both ended up scoring on a fielder error by Taylor Rogers. The Giants scored an additional run off a couple of hits in the seventh inning. The Yankees won 6-2.
With Clarke Schmidt on the injured list, Saturday night Cody Poteet was called up from Triple A for the Yankees and pitched against Giants ace Logan Webb. Poteet pitched five innings and gave up 2 runs and struck out 6. Webb pitched seven innings, gave up 4 runs and also struck out 6. The Yankees went up 2-0 at the start of the game. Juan Soto hit a single and scored on an Aaron Judge home run. They scored another two runs in the third inning off a sacrifice fly and an Alex Verdugo RBI single. In the same inning Casey Schmitt hit a two run home run for the Giants. The Giants scored another run in the fifth inning when Heliot Ramos reached second base on a throwing error and later scored. The Yankees came out swinging in the eighth after the Giants took Webb out. Judge hit a single, Alex Verdugo hit a triple, and Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run. The Yankees won 7-3.
Sunday afternoon Nestor Cortes took the mound against Blake Snell. Both Cortes and Snell didn’t pitch particular well. Snell left the game mid fifth inning after it appeared he may have injured himself. Juan Soto had a 430 foot solo home run in his first at bat immediately putting the Yankees on the board. The Giants tied the game in the second inning with an RBI single. Giants went ahead 3-1 in the third inning with solo home runs by Heliot Ramos and Casey Schmitt. Alex Verdugo tied the game in the fifth inning with a two run double. Dennis Santana replaced Cortes in the fifth inning after two batters and gave up a bunch of singles in the sixth inning that put the Giants ahead again, by 2 runs. The Yankees bullpen kept the Giants to 5 runs through the next two innings leading up to the ninth inning where the Yankees lineup rallied. Anthony Volpe had an RBI triple, which was followed by another home run by Juan Soto. The Yankees were now ahead 6-5. Next at bat was Aaron Judge who walked, stole second and made it to third on a throwing error which lined up perfectly for Giancarlo Stanton to be next at back. Stanton hit a ground rule double as the ball bounced over the right field wall and Judge scored. The Yankees were now winning 7-5. Clay Holmes came in to close out the game and earned his 17th save. Michael Tonkin earned the win and Camilo Doval got the loss.
The Yankees west coast tour is over as they head back to NYC for a three game series against the Twins.
In other news, this Tuesday night Gerrit Cole will have a minor league rehab assignment with the Somerset Patriots.
