YANKEES DEFEAT RAYS IN LATEST SHOWDOWN

- April Claudio, Contributor

Clarke Schmidt and Tyler Alexander took the mound in game one of this series. Both pitchers had stellar performances, giving up no runs until the sixth inning when Richie Palacios of the Rays hit a solo home run. The Yankees came alive in the seventh inning when Alex Verdugo scored on an error, Jose Trevino scored on a single by Anthony Volpe and Juan Soto followed up with a 3 run home run. The Yankees were on top 5-1. The Rays attempted a comeback in the 8th inning but were only able to score 2 runs. The Yankees won 5-3 with Dennis Santana getting the win and Clay Holmes getting his 8th save of the year.

Prior to game 2 the Yankees honored announcer John Sterling who announced his retirement after 36 years with the team. Sterling received a jersey with the numbers 5,361 on the back to commemorate the number of games that he has announced for the Yankees. John Sterling will forever be the voice of the New York Yankees and his creative home run calls will be greatly missed by fans.

Nestor Cortes faced off against Zach Eflin on the mound for game 2. Both pitchers had solid starts with Eflin only giving up 3 hits in six innings and Cortes giving up 6 hits in seven innings. Neither team scored a run until the 10th inning when Caleb Ferguson gave up 2 runs to the Rays. Despite a great outing by Cortes, the Yankees couldn’t get anything going and finished the game with only 4 hits. The Rays won this one, 2-0, with Jason Adam getting the win and Garrett Cleavinger getting the save.

Luis Gil took the mound in game 3 against Aaron Civale. The Yankees took the lead early, 1-0, when Juan Soto scored on a single by Anthony Rizzo. The Rays tied the game in the 3rd inning when Jose Caballero scored on a balk. Civale struggled in the 5th inning walking three straight batters. With the bases loaded and two outs, Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton scored on a single by Alex Verdugo. The Yankees scored two additional runs with line drive singles by Jose Trevino and Oswaldo Cabrera. Putting the Yankees ahead 5-1. Luke Weaver took over for Gil in the 6th inning. Weaver struggled by walking two batters to load the bases and fumbling a toss to Anthony Rizzo at first base but was able to get out of the inning without giving up a run. Dennis Santana took over the mound in the 8th inning and gave up 3 runs but Victor Gonzalez closed out the 9th inning to earn the save. The Yankees won 5-4.

The Yankees now have a record of 15-7 and will be back at it tomorrow with a four game series against the Oakland A’s at home.
