SMACKDOWN 10/20/23

-Jeffrey T. Fountain, Contributor

Smackdown opens with a replay of last week's season premiere where we saw Nick Aldis introduced as Smackdowns new General Manager. Yet tonight’s Smackdown opens with Paul Heyman giving us the cold opening. Let’s jump into the action!

Heyman discusses Jimmy Uso costing Jey Uso and Cody Rhodes the Undisputed Tag Team Championships on Monday Night Raw. He  goes on to mention the "L.A. Times" broke this story and it was the number one most read article in the “L.A. Times." The story was that The Tribal Chief will be defending his Undisputed Universal Title at Crown Jewel against L.A. Knight.

Paul mentions that like Texas we have a commonality in that they are both fans of LA Knight. He goes on to say that if you are a fan of LA Knight to watch Crown Jewel because it is the last time you will see him inside a ring. Paul says, “On Nov 4th at Crown Jewel, Roman Reigns is going to smash LA Knight and retain his championship”.

LA Knight makes his way to the ring when Paul Heyman mentions Roman Reigns smashing him and immediately tells Paul to leave and for Roman to get his ass to the ring. LA realizing Roman isn’t there tells Paul to get his ass back in the ring and to tell him what exactly Roman was going to do to him. Paul Heyman goes to leave the ring again and LA tells him to get his ass back in the ring or he was going to slap him so hard his hair was going to turn gray again.

LA mentions that the spear last week was a warning shot and that he doesn’t do warning shots. If you shoot him, you better put him down because he'll keep coming back like Michael Myers. He says, "He wont stop, cant stop until he owns Roman Reigns and the Undisputed Universal Heavyweight Championship...Yeah!"

He mentions the contract signing next week in the middle ring and that when Paul talks to him later to make sure he explains whose game it is, LA Knight's...Yeah!

Back Stage Segment

We see Bobby Lashley w/ the street profits getting hyped up to face the LWO's Santos Escobar.

Match 1

Santos Escobar (LWO) vs. Montez Ford (Street Profits)

Montez Ford came out the gate aggressive and looking impressive in what was a one way battle except a small glipse of some offense from Santos. Angelo Dawkins paid dividends in the end when it looked like Santos may have a win by pulling Montez out of the ring. This lead to a altercation with the rest of the LWO members outside of the ring that Angelo quickly disposed of before taking a big knee from Santos. This distraction was enough for Montez to grab a quick roll-up victory over Santos while holding the trunks. After the match Angelo and Montez beat down Santos until Carlito makes his way down to the ring to break it up.

Winner: Montez Ford

Back Stage Segment

Bailey and Dakota are getting Iyo Sky ready for her match against The Queen, Charlotte Flair.

After the break, we see LWO backstage licking their wounds and Rey Mysterio showing up and thanking Carlito for making the save on Santos Escobar.

Also, we get a Pretty Deadly package and the announce team asking, "How does Pretty Deadly celebrate a win?" Video package of Pretty Deadly at the spa getting pampered when their masseuses show-up and its the Brawling Brutes, who give the the "10 Beats" before leaving Pretty Deadly looking worse for wear at the spa.

Back Stage Segment

WWE cuts to the Bloodline locker-room and Jimmy Uso comes talking about how he cost his brother and Cody the WWE Tag Team titles. Paul Heyman tells Solo to check the monitor and its John Cena arriving at the arena.

Back from the Break, John Cena's music hits and out comes the Greatest of all Time.  John is apparently fired up and the crowd is chanting "Cena". "Thank you, Cena" chants ring out through the crowd and he says it means a lot. He got hit with some pretty harsh truths today, and he feels he needs to be honest. He is discussing Romans streak and then he brings up his streak of 2002 days since his last televised singles win. His last solo win on Smackdown was 2018.

He's been talking a lot about retirement and its time we all face the facts. "You still got it" chants ring out through the crowd and he believes in you and he believes in us and the beauty that is this madness. He believes the time is now to turn the time around. He says its going to be a bad night for the next idiot to come through that curtain and Solo Sikoa’s music hits and marches his way to the ring to confront Cena.

Cena and Solo start throwing hands and Jimmy makes his way to the ring and lands a super kick on Cena. We see a masked figure in black show up and pull Jimmy out of the ring and hit him and he reveals his face to be Jey Uso. Jimmy and Jey go at it and Jey gets the upper hand. In the ring we see Solo about to hit Cena with a Samoan Spike and John gets out of the way and hits a big Attitude Adjustment on Solo.

Backstage we see security escort Jey Uso to see Nick Aldis who fines Jey $10,000 when Adam Pierce shows up and says great you can fine his brother to for ruining the tag team match on Monday night. Nick ask security to escort Jey out of the building when Adam says he'll do it and then Nick says on second thought escort them both out. Adam Pierce says, "Let the games begin".

Backstage Segment

Logan Paul makes his way to the ring and the crowd rings out in "Boos". He talks about his boxing match and how it was a pathetic match and if he wanted real competition he should've had another WWE match.

He says he's not here for Rey Mysterio but he wants his United States Championship. He says he has already beat up one dead beat dad but looks like he's going to be beating up another one.

Rey Mysterio's music hits and he makes his way to the ring to confront Logan Paul. Rey tells Logan he reminds him of Dom; great natural ability in the ring, passion, incredible career ahead of you and a Big mouth.

Rey says Logan needs humbling but he has no hesitation to whip Logan's ass. Rey says he'll give Logan Paul the opportunity to take it from him at Crown Jewel.  They shake hands hesitantly.

Match 2

Grayson Waller/Austin Theory (A Town Down Under) vs. Cameron Grimes and Dragon Lee

Good back and forth match with good false finishes and good tag team action. Austin get the advantage with the rake of the eyes and some double team with Grayson. Austin hit a A Town Down for the Win.

Winner: A Town Down Under

Pre-Recorded Interview w/ Cathy Kelly and Kevin Owens

Cathy: How does it feel to seperated from Sammy?

Kevin: He says it doesnt feel good to be seperated after just losing the tag team titles and not getting a fair opportunity to win them back but being on Smackdown feels like a fresh start and a clean slate.

Cathy: Theres alot of familar faces here and some new ones that you havent crossed paths with yet.

Kevin: He mentions his history with the bloodline and list some opponents he wants to face like Rey Mysterio and Sheamus.

Kevin: i just want people to go home knowing whatever show I'm on, Its the Kevin Owens show.

Main Event

Iyo Sky w/ Damage Ctrl vs. Charlotte Flair

This match quickly became a 3 on 1 match as Damage Ctrl quickly made their presence felt. There was lots of big offense from both women in this match and multiple false finishes. Right when you thought Charlotte had the match won, Bailey puts Iyo's foot on the bottom rope. Charlotte attacks Bailey on the outside and when she gets back into the ring she attempts a spear but Iyo was holding the title and Charlottes spears the title and Iyo gets the 1, 2 and 3. After the match Damage Ctrl is beating Charlotte when Bianca Belair's music hits and she comes out to make the save for Charlotte.

Winner: Iyo Sky w/ Damage Ctrl

Take Aways

1. Roman Reigns was not at Smackdown

2. Tension between Adam Pierce and Nick Aldis is a good buildup to Survivor Series

3. Bianca is back

4. Only 3 matches on a 2 hour show was kinda lacking but if you enjoy the entertainment part of WWE, you got plenty of that.
