WWE SMACKDOWN 9/27/24: TRUST IS A MUST

- Rob Crowther, Editor In Chief

Friday's edition of SmackDown on USA Network planted a plethora of seeds amongst some of the top stars in the company. WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens, Randy Orton, and even Naomi all gave viewers some modicum of reasonable doubt.

Let's start with the tension between Kevin Owens and Rhodes after the fallout of Bash in Berlin. Owens essentially states that he and Orton don't need any help from Rhodes in their main event tag match against The Bloodline, whereas Orton seemingly plays an unlikely peacekeeper, telling Cody to interject if the numbers game becomes a factor. It's absolutely brilliant seeing Orton in this role, having as much fun as we've ever seen in his career. Something that could make a sudden heel turn that much more devastating.

The main event tag match was a solid one, ultimately ending in Bloodline interference and Rhodes coming to the aid of Orton and Owens. Unfortunately this caused an awkward ref ankle injury, allowing The Bloodline to take advantage. The night ends with frustration on the faces of the collective babyfaces, with Owens seemingly accepting the L, and hugging Rhodes at the end.  There's so many ways to go with this ahead of or during Rhodes pairing with Reigns at Bad Blood or even Survivor Series.

Conversely, Bayley and Naomi (with her awesome UNO inspired gear) had some friction of their own after Bayley defeated Naomi to qualify to face WWE Women's Champion Nia Jax at Bad Blood.  Post-match Bayley essentially apologies for squeaking out the win, and Naomi pushes back a little before accepting the loss, and challenging Tiffany Stratton to a match next week on SmackDown. The frustration and facials of Naomi displayed here at moments were excellent, and could be something to pay attention to moving forward.

The night featured several other great matches including an absolute banger between Carmelo Hayes and Andrade. These two just get better and better with every bout as I believe this was said to be their sixth.

Michin again defeated Piper Niven after a fairly quick bout last week. Michin continues to ride some momentum ahead of her dumpster match against the always BRILLIANT Chelsea Green next week.

Next week will also feature a triple threat tag ladder match with DIY and The Street Profits both challenging The Bloodline for The WWE Tag Team Championships. This should be an absolute show stealer ahead of next weekend's Bad Blood PLE.
