DEFENDERS WEEK 6: THE MOST EMBARASSING LOSS OF THE SEASON
- Tyler Yasembousky, Contributor
This week I’m not doing a play by play recap, Mike Mueller who covers the Panthers, has done that already. So instead this is just an opinion piece.
I am very disappointed in DC’s performance this week. Losing to a talented team like the Panthers is fine, but getting blown out isn’t acceptable.
Jordan Ta’amu is consistent and still playing at a MVP level, but he got majorly outshined this week by the Panthers QB Bryce Perkins.
Despite only scoring 14 points the offense isn’t even my biggest issue this week, it’s the defense. This team is meant to be built on defense, they are the Defenders after all.
The defense has looked AWFUL for weeks now. DC was able to overcome it last week but couldn’t this week. I’m not even putting this on all the players, I’m more disappointed and concerned with the play calling from Blake Williams.
Speaking bluntly, he seems to be in over his head. There’s just no other way to say it. Greg Williams, his father, had this defensive unit prepared every week. Blake doesn’t seem to have the same ability. It makes you wonder why Blake even got the job to begin with….
There’s been a lot of coaching changes for the DC Defenders, including losing their head coach right before the season started. Thankfully Interim Head Coach Shannon Harris has been doing a wonderful job.
Unfortunately, Greg left “unexpectedly” even though it was rumored that he would be joining former head coach Reggie Barlow at Tennessee State University before the season even started.
It felt like Greg only stayed on to get his son up to date on the job, but Blake isn’t living up to his end of the bargain. We need better play calling and better play from the defensive side of the ball.
The sky isn’t falling yet, because DC is still 4-2 and top of the XFL conference. However, if we don’t want a second half disaster, then we need to get it together right now.
We have what feels like a must week coming up against San Antonio. We lost to them once already this year, so it’s important to even it up.
