THE JETS MAKE HISTORY AGAIN
- Tom Mele, Contributor
The Jets this Christmas season made more history as they became second team in the NFL since 1961 to not punt the entire game and fail to score at least 10 points.
The Jets fell to the LA Rams 19-9 dropping their record to 4-11 but this holiday season is about suspending disbelief!! Whether you believe in Christmas, the drones hovering above NJ, or the world of professional wrestling, we all can take a moment to enjoy the magic that occurs every December.
This magical moment takes us to the Flash Gordon years! You all remember Flash Gordon. He was drafted No 1 overall in the 1976 draft out of Alabama, the same school that produced Jets legend Joe Namath. “Flash” was groomed to take over for Joe Namath during the 1976 season and it proved useful to learn from the best.
Flash Gordon was named the starting QB for the 1977 season after Namath left and Gordon started off with a bang throwing for 2600 yards and 18 TD’s but it was 1978 that all Jets fans remember as Gordon threw for 3100 yards and 25 TD’s including a memorable game on 12/17/78 when he set a Jet record with 500 yards passing. During the postseason Flash set a NFL playoff record with 5 TD’s in one game and of course it all ended in the Super Bowl XII win over the San Antonio Generals 32-14 as Flash Gordon won SB MVB and threw for four scores.
Flash Gordon would have a monster year in 1979 but that season was eventually remembered as the year Flash has to leave planet Earth to save the Universe.
Flash was never the same retiring the following year. Today you can still see Flash at all the local Comic Cons. I hold dearly the 1979 card he signed for me to this day. I have posted it here for your enjoyment
Enjoy the Holidays from the BCP plus and we will see you in 2025
