Friday night Nestor Cortes was on the mound against Mike Clevinger. Cortes, who has been mediocre so far this season compared to the Yankees’ other starters, earned his second win pitching seven shutout innings, striking out six and giving up only five hits. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton hit solo home runs and Alex Verdugo and Stanton had RBI’s that gave the Yankees 4 runs. The White Sox scored 2 runs, one of which was in the third inning on an error and the other off Ian Hamilton in the 8th inning. Caleb Ferguson got Hamilton out of trouble and Clay Holmes earned his 13th save. The Yankees won 4-2. Holmes has not allowed a run in 19 appearances.
Yankees starter Luis Gil pitched a phenomenal game Saturday afternoon, striking out 14 batters in six innings, 7 of which were consecutive and only gave up one run. The Yankees won this game 6-1. The Twins only run was in the first inning when Tommy Pham scored off a double by former Yankee Andrew Benintendi. Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton’s bats continued to be hot; Soto hit one home run and Stanton hit two home runs; both also had multiple RBIs. This was Soto’s 18th multi-home run game making the Yankees the first team this year with three double digit home run hitters: Soto, Judge and Stanton. Jose Trevino also had a solo home run. Gil set the Yankees’ rookie record for most strikeouts, one more than Orlando Hernandez; who happened to be at the game to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Sunday, Carlos Rodon struggled in the second inning giving up a solo home run to Corey Julks, his first of the season, and an RBI triple by Zach Remillard, putting the White Sox up 2-0. But the Yankees responded quickly with Anthony Rizzo and Gleyber Torres scoring on a single by Jose Trevino tying the game 2-2. After that inning Rodon pitched well making it six innings, striking out 6 and only giving up 4 hits. The Yankees scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a 3 run home run by Jon Berti and another 2 runs in the fifth inning on a 2 run home run by Aaron Judge that just barely made it over the right field wall. Michael Tonkin and Clay Holmes closed out the rest of the game and the Yankees won 7-2. Rodon earned his fifth win of the season. Chris Flexen got the loss giving up all 7 runs in only four innings.
The Yankees are now 33-15 as they head into a four game series against the Seattle Mariners.
