Friday night the Yankees started a 3 game series against the Toronto Blue Jays after a rain delay of over a hour, with Marcus Stroman on the mound against Kevin Gausman. Both teams came out swinging in the first inning with the Blue Jays scoring 3 runs on a triple, a double and some singles and the Yankees scoring 2 with a home run by Aaron Judge, his 40th, that went 477 feet. Stroman struggled in the third inning giving up 4 hits and a walk before being replaced by Michael Tonkin with the bases loaded. The Blue Jays scored 4 runs that inning putting them ahead 7-2. In the fifth inning Anthony Volpe hit a solo home run and Juan Soto, who walked, scored on a fielding error when Austin Wells hit a single. The Yankees couldn’t get anything else going and the Blue Jays added another run in the sixth inning. The Blue Jays won 8-5. Stroman earned his sixth loss and Brendon Little earned the win.
Gleyber Torres was benched after the third inning for lack of hustle. Torres did not run when he hit a ball at the wall thinking it was a home run. His lack of hustle only allowed him to get to first. Then later he got thrown out by several feet at home trying to score on a double by Volpe.
Saturday afternoon Carlos Rodon pitched against Jose Berrios. Berrios pitched 5 innings and gave up 5 runs and struck out 6. Rodon pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up 3 runs, struck out 8 and earned his 12th win of the season. It was an afternoon of home runs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a solo home run in the first inning but so did Aaron Judge and he had Juan Soto on base. Trent Grisham hit a 2 run home run in the second inning putting the Yankees up by 3. Anthony Volpe hit a 2 run home run in the six inning. The Blue Jays added 2 runs in the sixth inning off a single by Alejandro Kirk and that was it for them. The Yankees added 2 more runs in the seventh inning. Judge and Gleyber Torres walked and both scored on a single by Volpe. Austin Wells also hit a RBI single in the eighth inning. The Yankees won 8-3.
Sunday afternoon, after a rain delay of almost 2 hours, the Yankees pulled out a win in extra innings. Gerrit Cole got the start after missing his last one due to fatigue. Yariel Rodriguez got the start for the Blue Jays. Cole gave up 2 runs in the second inning and pitched 5 2/3 innings before being replaced by Luke Weaver. Rodriguez and the Blue Jays bullpen held the Yankees to 6 hits through 5 innings. The Yankees tied the game in the six inning. Juan Soto hit a home run in the seventh inning to put the Yankees up by 1 but the Blue Jays tied the game again in the eighth inning, due to Tommy Kahnle loading the bases with 2 walks and a fielding error by Trent Grisham. Clay Holmes came in and the run scored on a sacrifice fly. In the seventh inning Aaron Boone and a hitting coach got ejected for arguing a strike call on Austin Wells’ at bat. With the game tied, came the storm and the rain delay. Chad Green pitching for the Blue Jays and Mark Leiter Jr. pitching for the Yankees sent the game into the 10th inning. Leiter continued pitching the 10th inning and gave up no hits. Anthony Volpe started on second base for the Yankees and moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Grisham. The Blue Jays pulled an outfielder in to have 5 infielders with DJ LeMahieu at bat. LeMahieu found the gap in the infield and the Yankees won with a walk off single. Final score 4-3.
The Yankees get a day off Monday before a 3 game series against the Angels.
