Friday night, The New York Yankees started a 3 game series against the Tigers. Game 1 and 2 were in Detroit. The Yankees won game 1 and the Tigers won game 2.
In game 1, Gerrit Cole pitched against Beau Brieske. Cole pitched great, six innings, 0 runs, 4 hits and 8 strikeouts. Brieske only pitched 1 inning and gave up 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks. Brennan Hanifee relieved him for 2 innings but it was Brant Hurter who finished out the game. The Yankees scored 3 runs. Alex Verdugo hit a RBI sacrifice fly in the first inning, Oswald Peraza hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and Aaron Judge hit a home run in the eighth inning. The Yankees won 3-0. Cole earned his 4th win and Clay Homes earned his 26th save. Jose Trevino rejoined the lineup after missing 26 games.
Game 2, Carlos Rodon pitched against Keider Montero. Detroit won this game 4-0. Rodon pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up all 4 runs but the Yankees bullpen combined held the Tigers to only 3 hits the rest of the game. The Tigers scored all 4 runs in the first two innings. Spencer Torkelson rejoined the team after being sent down to Triple A and hit a double and a triple. Montero held the Yankees to only 2 hits in 5 innings. Tyler Holton and Jason Foley held the Yankees to 2 hits combined to close out the game.
Sunday both teams headed to Williamsport, Pennsylvania to finish the series at the Little League World Series.
Both teams were greeted by little league teams when their planes landed. The teams exchanged hats, took selfies and signed autographs for many kids. Several of the Yankees were seen sliding down the hill with the kids and sitting in the stands watching the games. Jasson Dominguez joined the Yankees for the game as each team was allowed a 27th player. Jazz Chisholm Jr. joined the team despite being on the injured list and spent time with the kids and during the game sat in the booth with the ESPN commentators.
Marcus Stroman got the start against Tarik Skubal. While the little league kids were hoping to see Aaron Judge or Juan Soto hit a home run what they got to see was a pitchers dual. Stroman pitched six innings, gave up 4 hits, 0 runs and struck out 5. Skubal pitched six innings as well, but gave up 1 run on 3 hits and struck out 5. In the sixth inning Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto walked. Torres moved to third base when Judge grounded out into a double play. Torres then scored on a wild pitch. The Yankees were winning 1-0 going into the ninth inning. With Clay Holmes on the mound with 2 outs and Colt Keith on second, Jace Jung hit a single and Keith scored to tie the game. Into extra innings we go. Anthony Volpe started on second base and scored on a single by DJ LeMahieu. Mark Leiter Jr. pitched for the Yankees and gave up a single that allowed the Tigers to score to tie the game again. Parker Meadows hit a walk off RBI single to win the game for the Tigers. Final score 2-3.
A big loss for the Yankees as they try to surpass the Orioles in the AL east. For now they are tied with the Orioles. They get Monday off as they travel to face the Guardians on Tuesday in a 3 game series.
