Tuesday night the Yankees were supposed to start a 3 game series against the Angels but with remnants of Hurricane Debby hitting the NY area Tuesday’s game got postponed.
However, on Wednesday the Yankees and Angels split a double header. The Yankees won game 1 with Luis Gil pitching like his old self. Gil pitched 5 scoreless innings, giving up only 2 hits and striking out 6. Davis Daniel pitched for the Angels and gave up 5 runs in 3 1/3 innings. Austin Wells and Anthony Volpe each had a RBI in the first inning and Oswaldo Cabrera hit a solo home run in the second inning putting the Yankees up 3-0 early. Alex Verdugo and Aaron Judge each had a RBI in the fifth inning adding 2 more runs. The Angels didn’t score any runs until the sixth inning when Zach Neto hit a 2 run home run off Jake Cousins. Final score 5-2. Gil earned his 12th win and Clay Holmes earned his 24th save.
Game 2 went to the Angels with Will Warren pitching against Carson Fulmer. Warren earned his first loss as a Yankee after pitching 4 1/3 innings and giving up 8 runs. The Angels scored 6 of those runs in the second inning off a few singles and walks and a 4 run home run by Zach Neto. The Yankees only scored 2 runs. One in the second inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored on an error during a single by DJ LeMahieu. The second was in the fourthinning, LeMahieu scored on a sacrifice fly by Gleyber Torres. The Angels scored 2 more runs at the hands of Neto in the fourth inning. Angels won 8-2.
Thursday, the final game of the series, went to the Angels. Nestor Cortes pitched against Tyler Anderson. Cortes pitched okay for a few innings but things went bad in the fifth inning. He gave up 6 runs in 4 2/3 innings. Anderson on the other hand pitched six innings and only gave up 1 run on 3 hits and struck out 7. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a solo home run in the second inning, his first in the Bronx. Nolan Schanuel hit a home run and a RBI single to give the Angels their first 2 runs. Then the fifth inning came. Cortes loaded the bases and 2 runs scored on a single by Kevin Pillar. Enyel De Los Santos replaced Cortes and loaded the bases again with a walk. Two more runs scored on a double by Jo Adell and then he scored on a single by Mickey Moniak. Zach Neto continued to hit the Yankees with a RBI single in the eighth inning. The Yankees scored 2 more runs that inning. Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton both hit RBI singles. Oswaldo Cabrera hit a solo home run in the ninth inning but it wasn’t enough. The Angels won 9-4.
