YANKEES WIN 2 OUT OF 3 AGAINST WHITE SOX/ JUDGE HITS 300th HOME RUN

- April Claudio, Contributor

Monday the Yankees started a 3 game series against the White Sox. Now the way the White Sox have been playing, it was fair to assume these would be 3 easy wins for the Yankees. But that’s not what happened. At least not for the first game.

Game 1 of the series had Luis Gil pitching against Ky Bush. Gil gave up 4 runs in 4 innings and Bush gave up 2 runs in 4 2/3 innings and walked 7. The White Sox were winning 2-1 in the first inning. Aaron Judge hit a RBI double and Andrew Benintendi and Gavin Sheets also hit RBI doubles. The White Sox scored 2 more runs in the fourth inning. Korey Lee hit a home run and Nicky Lopez hit a RBI single. In the fifth inning Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored on a single by Anthony Volpe putting the Yankees down 2 runs. He left the game after possibly injuring his elbow on the slide into home. But Sheets hit another RBI double off Tim Hill putting the Yankees down by 3. The seventh inning is when things went bad for the Yankees. Hill pitched well in the sixth inning and after pitching to 1 batter in the seventh, he was replaced by Enyel De Los Santos. Sheets hit his third RBI double, 2 more runs scored on a pair of singles and Brooks Baldwin hit a 3 run home run. To add icing on the cake Sheets had a RBI single in the eighth inning as well. The White Sox won 12-2.

Game 2 was better. Nestor Cortes pitched against Jonathan Cannon. Cortes actually pitched great. Probably his best outing in a long time, 7 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits and 9 strikeouts. Cannon pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up 3 runs. On the hitting side, it was Juan Soto’s night as he hit not one but three home runs. The White Sox didn’t score until the eighth inning and it was only one run. Final score was 4-1, the Yankees won.

In Game 3, the Yankees came out swinging. Will Warren got the start against Davis Martin. Warren pitched 5 innings, gave up 2 runs and struck out 5. Martin pitched 5 2/3 innings, gave up 1 run and struck out 5 as well. It was the White Sox bullpen that gave up a lot of runs, specifically Chad Kuhl. Juan Soto hit a home run in the first inning and Gavin Sheets hit one in the second inning to tie the game. Sheets had a RBI single in the fourth inning putting the White Sox up by 1. The Yankees scored 3 more runs in the seventh off a few hits. Then scored 6 runs in the eighth inning. Oswaldo Cabrera had a RBI single, Alex Verdugo had a RBI double, Aaron Judge hit a 2 run home run and Austin Wells hit a solo home run. That was Judge’s 300th home run, making him the fastest to hit 300.  The Yankees won 10-2.

Bad news from this series, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hurt his elbow in game 1 as I mentioned and he was placed on the 10 day IL. Let’s hope he doesn’t need surgery.

Next the Yankees take on the Detroit Tigers this weekend in Detroit.
