- April Claudio, Contributor
Last week the Yankees swept the Seattle Mariners and lost 2 out of 3 to the Chicago Cubs.
Here’s a recap of those games.
Game 1 was Will Warren pitching against Logan Gilbert. Warren pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings and Gilbert allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, in 5 1/3 innings. Neither team scored a run until the fifth inning when Paul Goldschmidt scored on a fielding error. Giancarlo Stanton hit a 3 run home run and Austin Wells hit a 2 run home in the fourth inning. They added 4 more runs in the seventh inning. Aaron Judge hit a home run, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a RBI double and Goldschmidt hit a RBI single. The Mariners didn’t score until the eighth inning when Julio Rodriguez hit a RBI double and MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh hit a 2 run home run. Yankees won 10-3.
With Clarke Schmidt injured the Yankees called up Cam Schlittler from Double A Somerset Patriots to start game 2 against Logan Evans. Schlittler had a great MLB debut, pitching 5 1/3 innings with 3 runs and 7 strikeouts. Evans allowed 6 runs in 4 2/3 innings. The Yankees took the lead early scoring 3 runs in the first inning off a pair of singles and a ground out. Jazz Chisholm Jr. added 3 runs with a solo home run in the third inning and a 2 run home run in the fifth inning. The Yankees won 9-6 despite the Mariners hitting 3 home runs.
Game 3 the Yankees were down 5 runs and were being shut out by Bryan Woo until the eighth inning. Austin Wells hit a RBI sacrifice fly and Giancarlo Stanton hit a 2 run home run. The Yankees were down 2 runs until 2 runners scored in the ninth inning off a single by Austin Wells which tied the game. Anthony Volpe started on second base in the tenth inning, Paul Goldschmidt pinched hit and was intentionally walked and Trent Grisham walked. With 1 out and the bases loaded Aaron Judge hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Volpe scored with a great slide into home. Yankees won 6-5.
Next brought on the Cubs. Game 1 went to the Yankees with Carlos Rodon pitching 8 shutout innings with 8 strikeouts against Chris Flexen. Prior to the game it was announced that Rodon would take Max Fried’s place in the MLB All Star game. The Yankees won 11-0. Cody Bellinger hit 3 home runs and had 6 RBI’s against his former team and Aaron Judge had 3 great defensive plays one of which robbed Pete Crow-Armstrong of a home run.
Games 2 and 3 went to the Cubs. They won game 2 with a score of 5-2 as Max Fried battled a blister on his pitching hand and left the game after only 3 innings. The Yankees’ 2 runs came late in the ninth inning when Aaron Judge hit a home run. He became the fastest player to hit 350 home runs. Matthew Boyd pitched 8 shut out innings for the Cubs.
Game 3 Will Warren pitched against Shota Imanaga. Warren only allowed 2 runs but Imanaga allowed 1 run and struck out 6 in seven innings. The Yankees’s lone run was a home run by Giancarlo Stanton in the second inning. The Cubs won 4-1. Cody Bellinger ended his 17 game hitting streak by going 0-3 and Aaron Judge struck out twice.
In other news DJ LeMahieu was designated for assignment after being upset about Jazz Chisholm Jr. moving to second base and essentially limiting his playing time. Jorbit Vivas was brought up to take his spot.
While Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Carlos Rodon are participating in All Star Week, the rest of the Yankees will be in Atlanta as well. They will have a 3 game series against the Braves after the break.
Luis Gil made his first rehab start on the 13th with the Somerset Patriots. He allowed 1 run in 3 1/3 innings and struck out 6. It looks like he may get one or two more starts before the Yankees bring him back.
