AARON JUDGE HITS FIRST POSTSEASON HOMERUN, YANKS WIN GAME 2
- April Claudio, Contributor
Last night the Yankees and Guardians played game 2 of the ALCS with Gerrit Cole on the mound versus Tanner Bibee.
Cole pitched well until the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth inning the Guardians loaded the bases but after a fly out and a strikeout Cole exited the inning without giving up a run. But in the fifth inning he loaded the bases again with 2 singles and a walk. A run scored on a sacrifice fly. He walked another batter before being replaced with Clay Holmes. Holmes allowed another run but got out of the inning with anymore damage. Cole finished the night pitching 4 1/3 innings, with 2 earned runs and 4 strikeouts.
Bibee, on the other hand, did not pitch well. He only lasted 1 1/3 innings. He gave up 3 runs, only 2 were earned and struck out 2. The Guardians used 7 pitchers out of their bullpen to finish out the game.
The Yankees took the lead early, scoring 3 runs in the first two innings. Gleyber Torres hit a double to start the game and Juan Soto followed up on a single. Aaron Judge got a hit due a fielding error to load the bases which allowed Torres to score. The next inning Anthony Rizzo and Anthony Volpe hit singles and both scored on a double by Alex Verdugo and a sacrifice fly by Judge. The Guardians made a gutsy call to walk Juan Soto to load the bases for Judge.
The Yankees scored 2 more runs in the sixth inning off a double by Rizzo putting them ahead 4-2.
In the seventh inning Torres hit a single and scored on a home run by Judge. His first home run of the 2024 postseason.
Luke Weaver gave up a home run to Jose Ramirez in the ninth inning but was able to close out the game.
The Yankees won 6-3. Holmes earned the win and Bibee earned the loss.
Game 3 will be Thursday in Cleveland with Clarke Schmidt versus Matthew Boyd on the mound.
