Friday night The New York Yankees began a 3 game series against The Boston Red Sox.
Game 1 went to the Red Sox with a score of 5-3. The Yankees blew this game. They were winning 3-1 going into the ninth inning until, with 2 outs on the board, Masataka Yoshida hit a 2 run home run off Clay Holmes to tie the game. Tommy Kahnle pitched the tenth inning and Ceddane Rafaela also hit a 2 run home run to win the game. This was Holmes’ fifth blown save. To add to the misery, Anthony Volpe and DJ LeMahieu didn’t hustle and caused an inning ending double play in the third inning and Gleyber Torres left the game after aggravating his groin. Nestor Cortes actually pitched well, he went six innings and gave up 1 run on 3 hits and struck out 8. Tanner Houck got the start for the Red Sox and pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up 3 runs, only 1 earned. The Yankees scored all of their runs in the fourth inning. Juan Soto and Aaron Judge walked and Torres hit a single to load the bases. Oswaldo Cabrera came in to run for Torres. Austin Wells grounded into a double play which allowed Soto to score, Judge scored on a walk by Volpe and Cabrera scored on a groundout by Trent Grisham.
Saturday night the Yankees redeemed themselves and won 14-4. Ben Rice became the first Yankees rookie to hit 3 home runs in one game. Gerrit Cole got the start and was still being limited in his pitch count. He pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up 4 runs and struck out 8. Josh Winckowski pitched for the Red Sox and pitched 3 2/3 innings, gave up 3 runs and struck out 4. Rice, hitting lead off, hit his first home run of the night in his first at bat. The Red Sox scored 3 runs in the third inning off a bunch of singles. The Yankees tied the game in the same inning as Aaron Judge hit a single and Alex Verdugo hit a home run. Rafael Devers hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, the Red Sox’s last run of the night. The Yankees got hot in the fifth inning as they added 4 more runs on a bunch of singles, walks and a ground rule double. Before the inning ended Rice hit his second home run of the night adding 3 more runs to the score. The Yankees were now up 10-4. In the seventh inning they added 4 more runs. Trent Grisham doubled, Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu singled, and Rice hit his 3rd home run. The Yankees dugout sent Rice out for a curtain call as the fans cheered. Tim Hill pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings and earned his first win as a Yankee.
Sunday night was a pitching dual between Luis Gil and Kutter Crawford. Crawford pitched 7 shutout innings and only gave up 4 hits. Gil pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up 1 run and struck out 9. Despite that the Red Sox won as Rafael Devers struck again hitting not 1 but 2 solo home runs and Ceddanne Rafaela hit a solo home run as well. The Red Sox won 3-0. The Yankees only used 2 pitchers after Gil, Luke Weaver and Michael Tonkin. The home runs were hit off all 3 pitchers.
The Yankees will get a much needed day off on Monday, to hopefully reset, before they head to Tampa Bay for a 3 game series.
