METS SWEEP THE YANKEES ONE MORE TIME

- April Claudio, Contributor

Tuesday night Luis Gil pitched against Jose Quintana. Gil pitched well, 5 innings and only gave up 1 run and struck out 6. Quintana also pitched 5 innings, gave up 1 run and struck out 6. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Quintana got the win. The Yankees went 1-0 in the second inning with a solo home run by Gleyber Torres. The Mets loaded the bases in the fifth inning and Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch, which allowed a run to score to tie the game. Jeff McNeil hit a 2 run home run off Michael Tonkin in the sixth inning putting the Mets up by 2. Alex Verdugo hit a RBI double to put the Yankees down by 1. Both bullpens kept the score at 3-2 to end the game, Mets won. Quintana and five relief pitchers combined, held the Yankees to only five hits. Aaron Judge walked 4 times, once intentionally.

Wednesday night was a night of home runs. Gerrit Cole got the start against Sean Manaea. Cole had a bad day, pitching 5 2/3 innings and gave up 6 runs. Manaea pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up 2 runs. Cole earned his second loss of the season. Here’s what happened. Gleyber Torres hit another solo home run putting the Yankees up 1-0 early in the first inning. The Mets responded with a solo home run by Tyrone Taylor in the third inning. Also in the third, Juan Soto hit a solo home run. Pete Alonso then hits a 2 run home run in the fourth inning. Mets are now winning 3-2. Here’s where things go bad for Cole and the Yankees. In the fifth inning Francisco Lindor hit a 2 run home run and they scored another run in the sixth inning off a single. The Yankees used 3 relief pitchers to pitch the eighth and ninth innings. Mark Vientos hits a solo home run, Jeff McNeil hits a double and scores on a throwing error by Oswaldo Cabrera, Lindor hits a second home run; 3 runs score, and Vientos has a RBI sacrifice fly. Now add that all up and the Mets have 12 runs. The Yankees scored 1 more run in the ninth inning, a RBI single by Austin Wells but that was it. Final score 12-3, Mets won and sweep the Yankees a second time. Cole did not hide his frustration well in the dugout and Aaron Judge shared his frustration in the post game press conference.

The Yankees head into the weekend with a 3 game series against the Red Sox. Let’s hope this weekend goes better than the last time the Yankees faced the Red Sox. There's still no word on whether Giancarlo Stanton will be rejoining the team this weekend but it seems like a possibility.
