Jets Week 9 Report
-Tom Mele, Contributor
The Jets “D” once again showed why it is one of the best in the NFL on Monday Night, but unfortunately, they lost to the Los Angeles Chargers 27-6, and it was not even that close.

The Jets held Pro Bowl QB Justin Hebert to only 136 yards passing the lowest of his NFL career. Hebert didn’t pass for a single TD, was held to only 16 for 30 passing and was sacked five times. And the game was not even that close.

The Chargers were held to only 14 first downs and as a team accumulated only 191 yards on offense. This was the first time in recorded NFL history that a team held an opponent to under 200 yards total, 150 yards passing, and still lost by more than 20 points while outgaining them overall 270-191. And it was not even that close.

From the outset the Chargers pounced on the Jets as Darius Davis returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown less than a minute into the game. From there the Jets fumbled on their next two possessions leading to a second TD for the Chargers (4-4). For the rest of the half both teams traded punts and battled for field position and at the half the Jets (4-4) were down 17-3.

Starting the second half the Jets cut the lead to 17-6 as HC Robert Saleh incorporated a no huddle offense that moved the ball all the way down the Charger eleven-yard line, but back-to-back sacks forced the Jets into the Field Goal.

Overall, the Chargers feasted on Wilson the entire night sacking him 8 times and forcing him into two fumbles. The Jets used turnovers to their advantage in their three-game winning streak but this evening it was the Chargers who won the turnover battle 3-0.

The Jets again struggled on 3rd down going 3-17. They are at a league low 23% conversion rate on third down which would be the lowest figure since 1978. NY has scored only seven touchdowns in their last seven games. The offensive woes continue and MNF Analysis Troy Aikman had this to say after the game “The Jets are a bad football team with a great defense!” As of now this cannot be disputed as the Jets chances of reaching the playoffs is down to only 13%.

Next week the Jets fly to Vegas to take on the Raiders who won their first game under new head coach Antonio Pierce 30-6 over the Giants.
