Grinch Almost Steals Christmas From The Jets
-Tom Mele, Contributor
MetLife almost witnessed a “Blue” Christmas, but it was Kicker Greg Zuerlein whose heart grew 10 times in size as he kicked a 54-yard field goal with five seconds to go, to save Christmas for the Jets in a 30-28 win over the Washington Commanders.
New York (6-9) puts it’s NFL worst ranked offense versus the Commanders (4-11) worst ranked defense and the Jets dashed away to a 27-7 lead at the half.
RB Breece Hall was running as he was leading Santa’s sleigh rushing 20 times for 95 yards and two TD’s. Hall also caught 12 passes for 96 yards. The 190
scrimmage yards with 12 receptions and two rushing TDs has never been accomplished by an NFL player in the Super Bowl era. Hall was obviously on the nice list.
Jets QB Trevor Siemian was 27-49 for 217 yards and a TD and Washington QB Sam Howell struggled going 6/22 with two picks and he was pulled in favor of backup QB Jacoby Brissett in the third quarter. Brissett did his best “Scrooge” impersonation as he completed 10 of 13 passes for 100 yards and a TD. RB Chris Rodriquez Jr was “Burgermiester meisterburger” carrying the ball 10 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns. The Commanders were now up 28-27 with 4:52 remaining.
In the end it was the defense which has been on the “nice list” all season long stopping the Commanders with 1:41 to go and allowing the Gang Green to get into FG range for the game winner from Zuerlein who has now made 30 of 31 field goals this year and possibly Jets 2023 MVP.
