RENEGADES WEEK 2: HOUSTON HAD A FEW PROBLEMS
- Kelvin Kately, Senior Editor
It wasn’t pretty, but it was entertaining. The Arlington Renegades have started their season 2-0, but not without a stiff challenge from the Houston Roughnecks. Establishing the run on offense seemed to be a priority of Arlington, which is one of the biggest differences from their last season. Houston’s defense, though, seemed to match the energy that they were given and replied all day. Very early, it felt like this was going to be a war of attrition.

One of the early highlights came from Marquette King, who put Houston in a bind with a crazy punt to put the ball on the one-yard line. Arlington also matched Houston’s energy with great defense. However, with both teams playing great defense, we ended our first half with six points between the two teams. It seemed evident that the one would come down to who made the least mistakes on defense.

To start the second half, Arlington started to move the ball well but turned over the ball after a brutal shot to Sal Cannella. However, they got the ball right back with an interception from Ajene Harris. Penalties hurt the ensuing drive, and they lost a 4th and one attempt. Houston, though, was unable to capitalize and Arlington took control of the clock, extending their possession into the 4th quarter. Running back Dae Dae Hunter provided a spark the Renegades desperately needed, and Arlington took control with a touchdown pass from Perez to Deontay Burnett. But Houston matched that by getting the ball and scoring! After such a great defensive game, we got high drama! On the 2-point conversion, Houston gave their all but could not convert, as Arlington stood their ground! Their ensuing 4th and 12 attempt is no good and Arlington ran out the clock to end a great game!

After the game, Coach Bob Stoops highlighted the fact that the team needed “play cleaner and smarter overall.” It is a refreshing take after seeing them start the season undefeated and showing the grit to fight through adversity to pull off a win. If you are an Arlington Renegades fan, this is something to be very hopeful about as the season progresses. It’s way too early to call. But one thing is for sure. The Arlington Renegades are on a mission this season. I’m here for it!
