THE NEW 2025 YANKEES

- April Claudio, Contributor

The Yankees started off the 2025 season with a team slightly different than the one they had in the 2024 World Series.

If you weren’t following along in the off season here’s a quick update. Gleyber Torres, Jose Trevino, Nestor Cortes, Cody Poteet, Clay Holmes, Alex Verdugo, and Juan Soto are all on different teams. Anthony Rizzo is still in free agency land.

Jonathan Loaisiga returned to the Yankees while they added new comers: Max Fried, Devin Williams, Carlos Carrasco, Pablo Reyes, Ryan Yarbrough, Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger.

These changes are making room for Jasson Dominguez, Trent Grisham, Oslwaldo Cabrera, Ben Rice, and Oswald Peraza to get more playing time.

The Yankees began the 2025 baseball season with several players on the Injured List: Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, Jake Cousins, DJ LeMahieu, Scott Effross, Ian Hamilton and the biggest loss of the season - Gerrit Cole.

Despite all of that, the Yankees kicked off opening weekend with a bang winning their first 3 games against the Brewers. They had a total 13 home runs across the 3 games and scored a total of 36 runs. With these kind of numbers baseball fans and media were wondering if the new torpedo bats were why the Yankees were hitting so well. But only a few players use the bats, Aaron Judge not one of them, and these bats aren’t exclusive to the Yankees as other players from other teams have switched to them as well.

In the second game of the series they scored 20 runs. Eight of those runs were off former Yankee Nestor Cortes. He gave up 3 home runs in his first 3 pitches. That’s right, not the first 3 at bats, the first 3 pitches!! Now, as a Yankee fan, it was a fun game to watch, but I felt a little bad for Cortes at the same time.

Since then the Yankees have played 3 other NL teams the Diamondbacks, Pirates, and most recently the Giants and also played a series against the Tigers. Despite sweeping the Brewers the Yankees were only able to win 1 or 2 games of each of the series that followed.

The Yankees new closer Devin Williams missed some time due to paternity leave but Luke Weaver filled in nicely pitching six innings, with a 0 era and one save. Williams has only pitched four innings so far this season and has a 9.00 era with a save. Hopefully now that he’s back and can pitch consistently and warmer weather is on the horizon, we will see some improvement and a glimpse of the closer the Yankees organization was looking for.

After this weekend’s series against the Giants the Yankees have a record of 8-7.

Aaron Judge has hit 6 home runs in these few short weeks. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is right behind him with 5 home runs and Rookie Ben Rice and Anthony Volpe each have 4 home runs.

This weekend Marcus Stroman was placed on the IL but the Yankees will get some help with Ian Hamilton and Clarke Schmidt coming off the IL.

The Yankees have finished their series against NL teams for the month of April and will have 16 games to close out the month against the Royals, Rays, Orioles, Guardians and Blue Jays.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Yankees 2025 season.
