STEELERS WEEK 3 RECAP: THE FIRST BUMP IN THE ROAD
- Tyler Yasembousky, Contributor
Undefeated no more, The Pittsburgh Steelers finally took their first Loss of the year against the Indianapolis Colts. I have to be honest looking at our schedule. This is one of the few games I thought we had in the bag, especially going against Anthony Richardson a guy who I admit is extremely talented, but I do not believe has the basic mechanics down yet to be a starting quarterback.
Yes, he has a canon for an arm. He has great mobility and can run 100 mph. But he’scompletely inconsistent when it comes to accuracy. The guy misses wide open throws or sometimes he will put to much on the ball and just miss the open receivers. So going into this game, I really thought we would give him trouble and we would win a close yet competitive game.
Unfortunately, what I didn’t see coming were two things... Our defense completely failed us... (this was obviously a surprise as we statistically, had the best defense in the league leading into this game)
Richardson would leave the game with injury and his back up Joe Flacco would play (Joe Flacco is like the boogie man in Pittsburgh for whatever reason this dude has always given us trouble.)
I think most people felt that when the Steelers finally lose, it will be because they couldn’t score enough points and/or their offense would let us down. That's not what happened, instead our defense actually played their best game of the year points wise ! 24 points for the Steelers is some new territory. Instead the Steelers defense was sleep walking into this game…they just wouldn’t wake up and
play.
We went down 14-0 in the first quarter. This is a defense that only allowed 8 points a game for the first 3 games. So obviously this wasn’t a good sign….and it didn’t get better.
We would give up 27 points in total, which is completely mind boggling considering how good
we looked coming into this game. Especially if a starting quarterback gets knocked out of the game…you would think that’s a good sign and you have the win in the bag. But not when the back-up is actually far better than the starter in many ways.
Remember when I talk about how inaccurate Anthony Richardson was ? Yeah Joe Flacco is not. He’s a very accurate QB and that’s always been his biggest strength. I could also blame the refs. I mean, you can watch the film TJ Watt was held almost every single play, but I’m not gonna do that despite mentioning it because honestly that happens every weekend in the NFL.
But weirdly unless you’re the Kansas City Chiefs, you don’t get the calls. It’s interesting how that
happens huh? Despite the negative of the loss, I was very encouraged by how Justin Fields once again
played and how well our team came back at the end of the game.
We lost 27-24 and we had the ball with an opportunity to tie at end of the game. Unfortunately, there’s been a lot of issues between the center and Justin Fields and a bad hikecost us any opportunity and kicking a field goal.
A field goal that you know, our man, Chris Boswell would’ve made !
So unfortunately, we had our first loss of the year ! Now we had into Sunday night football, the biggest stage in the NFL to play another historic franchise the Dallas Cowboys ! One of our biggest rivals historically.
My household will be divided for this game.
The Pittsburgh Steelers even with the loss the lead the AFC North at 3-1.
Hopefully, we can get a win next week in primetime and show the world, these first three games
weren’t a fluke.
